Beautiful tour in the Bohemian Forest holiday region with few inclines!
0 km Schöneben parking lot. (936 m) Passing the Böhmerwald Arena, head towards the Moldaublick viewing tower. At the end of a short ascent, you will reach the
4.5 km Moldaublick viewing tower. The viewing tower offers impressive views across the border to Czechia and the Lipno Reservoir. Go back about 3/4 of a km and turn left onto the gravel forestry road towards Grünwald and Aigen-Schlägl. On this level road you will then reach the
8.5 km Grünwald plateau. The asphalt road begins at the end of the forest. Passing the parking lot, you will leave the settlement. At the sports complex, after the city limits sign, turn left. Through the forest, continue downhill to
11.6 km Oberhaag. (You can also start the tour here) Right at Schwedenschanzen, you will hit the municipal road that takes you from Aigen-Schlägl to the border at Diendorf/Kyselov. Take the long, level road towards the border. The R27 State Bicycle Path runs alongside it all the way to Schöneben. Don't miss your turn left to the Alluvial Canal, where you will reach the
14 km Schrollenbachschleuse Lock shortly afterwards. This lock was lovingly restored to celebrate the Canal’s 200 year anniversary in 1989. The following 8 km Canal section to Sonnenwald (gravel forestry road) has three more locks in store: Landsknechtin and the die 7 Raben (“7 Ravens”) sculpture, as well as the locks known as Wessenbach- and Kesselbachschleuse. Once you have arrived at idyllic
21.3 km Sonnenwald the “Blauer Hirsch” snack bar provides an opportunity to relax and grab some food. Only a few people live in this forest clearing nowadays and few houses remain. In its heyday, the town numbered 16 buildings. Lots of wood, a glass factory and the Schwarzenberg Canal attracted many a worker from the surrounding areas. In 1900 the glass factory – nothing of which remains today except a few relics exhibited at the Ulrichsberg glass museum – was shut down. Continue down the asphalt road. Follow the signs uphill. Pass the turn towards the Schöneben border crossing on your right and continue uphill to the
24.5 km Schöneben plateau. Approximately 140 years ago, a settlement was established here along the “Salt Road” leading to Bohemia, which was mentioned in official documents as early as 1588. Today, it features a beautiful leisure area popular in the summer (high rope course) and the winter (Nordic skiing centre).
