With an altitude of 1378 metres, the peak is the highest mountain in the Austrian part of the Bohemian Forest on the one hand, and on the other hand it is also the highest elevation in the entire Mühlviertel region and in southern Bohemia.
Its striking location in particular makes the Plöckenstein a special feature. On the one hand, it is located in the border area between Austria and the Czech Republic, with the border running directly over the Plöckenstein. On the other hand, the highest mountain in the Mühlviertel rises only about one kilometre from the border triangle of Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.
