The Jazzatelier is an Upper Austrian cultural association with its own premises in Ulrichsberg (Mühlviertel). Its main focus is the presentation and communication of a high-quality programme of events in the fields of music, film and visual arts.
The Jazzatelier was founded in 1973 and was initially primarily interested in traditional jazz and blues music, but today it also focuses on various forms of contemporary improvised and composed music. At no time was it the intention of any ruling structure to establish this organisation. On the contrary, the project had to be wrested from the circumstances. The political positioning required for this, the advocacy of attitudes and values, is still one of the most important points in which the Jazzatelier differs from merely market-orientated entertainment providers.
The organisation has had its own venue since 1986. The programme that takes place there consists of around ten concerts a year and the international music festival "Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon". Occasionally - approximately every two years - a further, themed or person-specific music festival is organised under the title "Phonomanie". In addition to the music programme, the Jazzatelier also offers events in the areas of film (around 10 films per year) and visual arts (two to three exhibitions per year). The programme of the three sections is primarily based on values such as "quality before quantity", contemporary, minority-friendly, uncompromising, critical, internationally open but also persistent and continuous.
Top-class events and film screenings are held in the Jazzatelier all year round. In addition, exciting exhibitions are always on show in the gallery.
