The Mühlviertel, and the HansBergLand in particular, has an ideal climate for hop growing. Critical brewers always confirm the excellent quality of the beer during the annual assessments.
Good beer needs good hops. This realisation was probably also the reason why hops began to be cultivated in HansBergLand over 1000 years ago.
In 2003, hops were planted on 45 farms covering an area of 45 hectares. This quantity covers approx. 13 % of Austria's demand.
Characteristic for hops are the trellises with a height of approx. 7 m, which characterise the landscape in HansBergLand.
The Hopfensteig (two circular routes of 5 and 12 kilometres each) in the municipality of Ortisei offers the opportunity to visit hop fields. The farmers involved will be happy to give you more information about hop growing.
The starting point is at Gasthaus Lang, 4120 Ortisei, Pehersdorf 16, tel. 07282/8077.
