Observation tower closed until April 2024!
Fantastic view
The observation point on a small hill on the Sulzberg (1041 m) offers a beautiful view of the Moldaustausee (Vltava reservoir; Czech Republic) - one of the largest reservoirs in Europe - and of Adalbert Stifter’s birthplace in Oberplan.
The majority of the area of the Czech Republic visible from here was settled by the German-speaking population until the end of World War II. Afterwards, the Sudeten Germans were evacuated from their home country. The small hill on the Sulzberg offers the displaced a beautiful full view of their former home.
After the trees had grown higher and higher and the view had become worse and worse, the municipality of Ulrichsberg decided to put up a viewing tower. The tower, an old oil drilling tower from Gänserdorf, is 24 m high, has 137 steps and was put up in 1967.
Different hiking paths lead to the Moldaublick. Those wanting to spare themselves from the somewhat steeper climb to Schöneben can embark on their hike directly in Schöneben, as well. In the summer months, driving directly to the tower via Ulrichsberg, Schöneben is also possible. A large parking lot, sanitary facilities! In the winter, ONLY one cross-country skiing trail leads to the Moldaublick!
The Holzschauhaus (wooden show house) is a model house built using three timber construction methods: The log cabin is made from fir wood, the annex is a frame construction and the shelter uses round timber framing. At the Holzschauhaus, you can look at mood pictures and listen to texts by Stifter with headphones in 2 large wooden chairs!
