Colouring with fermented persimmon tannin

Kakishibu is a fermented plant stain that has its roots in Japan and is obtained from green, unripe persimmon fruits. Fermentation produces an intense, tannic, brown liquid that is traditionally used on textiles and wood. It is highly valued for its astringent, non-toxic and antiseptic properties and is a wonderful, direct dye for all types of fibres.
In the course, we will work with different concentrations of the mordant and learn how to create beautiful colour compositions in combination with other metal mordants, from delicate ochre tones to red tones and almost black brown tones.
The pre-washed fabrics and all materials for dyeing will be provided by the course leader for a fee - there will be enough fabric to make a small table runner or wall hanging (noren).
