Führung im Kaufmannsmuseum

Haslach an der Mühl, Oberösterreich, Österreich

Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. for individual visitors

In the fully stocked general store of the KAUFMANNSMUSEUMS [Merchant’s Museum] one can experience the authentic shopping atmosphere of the period around 1920 as it prevailed in these parts in many villages until the 1960s.

Drawers full of a colourful mix of things for daily use, nostalgic advertising billboards, historical packaging, colonial goods and much more takes one back to a time when the local supply played a central role in the village. Ringing brandnames such as Stollwerck, Bensdorp, Manner, Kirstein-Blockmalz, Alma, Sirius, Libella, Hirsch-Seife, etc. not only remind of grandma’s times but bring topics into focus which gain actuality in view of the new concepts of local supply.
The museum is, in fact, a former village shop. Apart from the so-called colonial goods whose history is traced in the museum, many shopping containers from the 19th and 20th century can be admired. There are also exhibits referring to the apprenticeship of a merchant and the history of office and administrative work around 1900. The history of advertising and packaging is also descriptively demonstrated. There are old porcelain enamel signs and product catalogues that appear exotic to us, as well as early evidence of product development.
