1.2 km ... steep section of the Schwarzenberg alluvial canal - the "Steilstufe". With a thunderous roar, the logs tumbled down the riverbed lined with granite blocks during the snowmelt. It was one of the most dangerous places for the panners who worked here when the logs were washed down. If the timber became wedged here, the following logs were often hurled metres into the air.
